Yes. Just like Google search and yahoo search and even bing search engine, there’s a new search engine called Yandex search engine which is highly recommended for people travelling to or living in any part of Russia. The makers of the Yandex search engine are the folks behind the Yandex launcher. And, Yandex search has quite a following, with 10 million downloads and the app itself is pretty snappy for the most part, as you would expect from a search engine. In simple terms, it’s the Russian version of Google search. It’s just like Google search, but with a pinch of material design-ish icons and a built-in English to Russian translator. The Yandex launcher is still a pretty new competitor in the launcher segment but it holds it own pretty well. There are few key aspects we need to look into, in order to get a full picture of what the app is about. So, let’s break it down into simple segments, just for simplicity’s sake.

Home Screen
The app homescreen is no different from any simple launcher. For the most part, it’s minimal and has very smooth transitions with six different transition effects to choose from. It has support for widgets and apps can be moved around from screen to screen and there is no “home screen” in particular. Once you open an app from a particular screen, you’ll come back to find the same screen instead of a default home screen. There is a folder feature of the home screen, or rather, “smart folders” which can be colour customized. The icons on the home screen can have a classic look without any background, or you can choose a white rounded-rectangle background for all the apps. I personally enjoy the classic look. Another big overhaul over your traditional launcher is the grid size. Google search
The Google Search bar on the home screen has some tweaked functionality. For example, once you click on it, it displays a grid of your recent google search sites, a grid of your most recent apps, and a grid of your recent contacts. Unlike the google search app, this version suggests a website URL while you’re typing it, which is very handy in case you forget the complete URL and remember a bit of it. App Drawer
This is where the magic happens. The app drawer is minimal. And beautiful. It’s just a vertical scrolling app drawer with categories for different things ranging from gaming to productivity. The order of the categories is customizable but unfortunately, the names of the categories are not. This is due to the fact that every possible category name that a productive user can think of, is already present in the category list so, there’s nothing you’re losing, unless you’re someone who likes to keep funky names for different categories. Now, the main region where the app drawer shines is app search. And this is what many users look for in an app launcher. You want to get to an app fast. So, what does this app do with regard to this? Below th app drawer is a grid of colours. All apps have a characteristic colour and the app links them to this grid of colours. So, for example, if you click on the pink pallette, all apps that have predominantly pink icons show up in the drawer. This makes it easy to find the app you are looking for. The reason why this feature is so cool is because you usually remember an app icon better than it’s name so, it’s easier to find an app by visual memory, especially since you’ll remember the colour very well. The Yandex launcher is no doubt a great launcher but let’s face it, no app launcher is perfect. There’s always something you wish every app launcher had, but doesn’t have.
